The Shepherds' Play / Chanticleer and the Fox

13 March 1985 – 30 March 1985 St Martins Theatre

Playbox Theatre Company, The Medieval Players,

Classic Theatre

A presentation based on texts from the literature of medieval Europe, presented by a touring company of Cambridge University graduates. According to the press release, the group "combine the juggling, slap-stick comedy, fire-eating, stilt-walking and musical skills of the actors and the strong narrative and bawdy humour of the time to provide a theatre as entertaining as ever delighted a crowd in a medieval market place."

"The Shepherd's Play" is taken from the Wakefield Pageants of the Towneley Mystery Cycle, a text that has been basis of many school nativity plays. "Chanticleer and the Fox" is an adaptation from Chaucer's Nun's Priest Tale.

The Company also performed a second programme called "An Evening of Song and Rubbish", which included music from their repertoire of 11 plays, along with juggling, clowning and acrobatic routines.
