Heroic Measures by Tom Lindstrom is an epic saga examining the role of artists in society, their power as the voice of dissent and as a catalyst for social change.
Set in post WWII Russia, Heroic Measures is based loosely on the events of composer Dmitri Shostakovich's life in exile. Stalin's regime has well and truly taken hold. People everywhere are either embracing the system or living in fear of it. Two of the latter are old friends Ginzburg, a dissident poet, and Shurmansky, a discredited composer. Beginning with the seizure of Ginzburg, the silent majority's poet, Heroic Measures follows the course of his incarceration and its effect on those around him.
Heroic Measures celebrates the artist's strength as social commentator and as a voice for change within a world of repression and censorship at its very worst. It also studies human behaviour in the face of danger: how ultimately we all must choose our path of action and decide upon our own heroic measure.
