Recital
By David Chesworth & Douglas Horton
03 June 2005 – 26 June 2005 CUB Malthouse
Malthouse Theatre, Chamber Made Opera,
Theatre Opera Remount Co-Production
Trapped in the purgatory of her own imagining, the Diva is the quintessence of the world's greatest opera singers - or perhaps a lost and demented soul who simply thinks she is. Art and life, fantasy and reality, tragedy and comedy converge in a wicked and witty commentary about a monstrous ego still capable of transfixing us.
Recital offers satirical profundity from a rich and humorous examination of operatic myths, here staged with Beckettian simplicity. Involving ten of the world’s best known and best loved arias and David Chesworth’s witty and original score, Recital is a highly original hybrid of opera and theatre. As much satire as celebration of ‘high art’, the distinction between the life of a performer, and life as performance, blurs with telling consequences.
