Modest Expectations

By David Allen

01 November 1990 – 24 November 1990 Beckett Theatre

Playbox Theatre Company,

New Writing Theatre World Premiere

Dickens sent many of his characters, and two of his sons, to Australia. the play explores what might have happened had Dickens himself journeyed to this great South Land. The most successful Australian theatrical entrepreneur of the late 19th Century was George Coppin: populist, businessman and entertainer extraordinaire. Inside Australia's first prefabricated theatre, the "Iron Pot", the playwright invites us to enjoy Coppin's brash colonial optimism as a foil to the ageing, disillusioned Dickens.
