Commission Theatre Dance Co-Production Tour
It's a show that emerges from a community little understood in wider Australia, and like Honour Bound - Jamieson's physical theatre piece about the Guantanamo Bay prisoner David Hicks - it is driven by a profound political anger. But what you come away with is a vital joyousness, the rebellious humour and resilience of the Yolngu people, that shows the other side of the doom-laden headlines. Indigenous people have often responded to their situations with subversive humour, and the Chooky Dancers are no exception.
Prior to the Malthouse season, the show was part of the Adelaide Festival of the Arts (11-14 March). It also toured to Darwin for the Darwin Festival (27-28 August), and had a season at the Sydney Opera House (2-12 September).
Presented in memory of Frank — The Father of Music in North East Arnhem Land.
"THE NINE DANCERS WERE SHY AND CAUTIOUS ... BUT WHEN A DISCO BEAT STARTED, THEY GRINNED AND PLAYED TO THE CROWD, SWIVELLING THEIR HIPS AND CREATING THEIR OWN BLEND OF TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY DANCE."
— The Australian
